Urban Sketch: Sultan Abdul Samad Building

A few months ago, I went urban sketching for the first time in my life. Before this, I was just drawing buildings from digital pictures on the internet. It has been a fulfilling experience because the feeling is different. Rather than crouching in sofa, straining eyes to look for details on the photos, I got to move around, finding for the perfect spot to draw the particular areas I want to. Plus, the environment is something to remember; the heat, noise, people and most importantly, the journey to the place.

I got better at making rough sketch of the overall and experimenting with colours. I used design markers to fill in the sketch. It was ugly at first, I was about to feel down before everything turned out well when I outlined the building with a black sharpie. Fyi, it took me around 2 hours to finish the drawing. I was afraid I might take longer since I took Afah with me too. Hehe.

At first, the plan was to draw the front side of the Abdul Samad building but then, it was so hot, I could barely stand the heat at Dataran Merdeka. So, I stayed at the entrance of the building and decided that perhaps it would be better if I concentrate on one spot only and I picked this tower. :)

I would go on my own because maybe it would be a hassle if I force others to come with me but hey, Afah (my pizzative Sarawakian fwen) agreed to join me and we took the bus and ktm to get to Masjid Jamek before walking to Dataran. Aargh I love this sort of adventure! It feels great to be able to go on spontaneous trips like this one and get out of my crammed hostel room once in a while (okay, I never really stay in my room anyway). I can't really say get to breathe in fresh air since well, it's KL. ;/

She-sketch: Amelie

The past weeks in law school have been hectic (it's crazyyy). I was rushing to meet the deadlines for my moot submission, assignments, presentations, Novice and tests. Every day I came back to my room feeling exhausted and it didn't take me long to doze off but to wake up early in the morning is still hard. Despite the schedule being hectic, I enjoyed it because it made me productive. I felt good about myself when crossing off one thing after another on the list.

Due to that, there were some days when the tension was further intensified and my brain just couldn't cope and I just ended up screaming or crying. Hahah. Then, after I was done with most of them, when I finally had some time for myself, I switched off my phone and googled for a light movie and that's when I stumbled upon Amelie. :)

It's a French movie and very heartwarming.

I'm glad my midterm break has started. And I can't wait for my art sesh with my cuzzies! We decided that the theme will be Flowers & Leaves.

Amelie (the drawing) is all about letting the world past and she just stands there, letting the wind blow her hair and breathing in fresh air and just be at peace.

You live dizzy and busy finding yourself often in a tizzy. All the while who you really are is at peace, deep, calm and tranquil. Just a little dip into that peace.

Artsy Smartsy

Well, hectic uni schedule is back! But I thought I should update this online journal of mine with words of wisdom. Let's see the things I learnt from the past weeks.

#1 Be positive!
Being positive always makes you feel hopeful again, believe that it's not so bad, that there are ways to get around the failure and reduce the impact. It reprioritises your mind to the actual problems rather than just be sullen. I can see and feel that by forcing myself to think positively, I become a much more confident person and that is really wonderful because I kinda lost my self-esteem since I started my degree. This is a new start! How did I make myself think positive? I repeatedly tell myself that 'it's okay, think positive, calm down, think positive'. I try my best to eliminate all the negative thoughts and focus on advancements that I can make.

I know there are people who say being so positive is not that good too because it makes you overlook certain things and become a bit overconfident. Well mister, I say you don't really understand people. As a person, everyone is unique and has their own set of needs to overcome their hurdles. Being positive is my defence mechanism. I have been pessimistic in my life, and I didn't see much significance it brought to my life. I hate pessimism.

#2 Rediscovering passion
It's great to find back your old passion. I like drawing. It's my way to escape from the stress. I usually spent hours on my drawings. During those hours, my mind thinks of nothing, just what should be on the paper. I don't really think much when I draw so that moment, everything on my mind is silent and I calm down. Some people sometimes wonder of the patience artists have when they're working on their art. But making art is addictive and peaceful. What more when the end result is satisfying.

Ah okay, now I'm lazy to type and think of possible things I've learnt. Maybe next time when I'm freer. Btw, oats with chocolate skimmed milk is love. :)
