Urban Sketch: Sultan Abdul Samad Building
A few months ago, I went urban sketching for the first time in my life. Before this, I was just drawing buildings from digital pictures on the internet. It has been a fulfilling experience because the feeling is different. Rather than crouching in sofa, straining eyes to look for details on the photos, I got to move around, finding for the perfect spot to draw the particular areas I want to. Plus, the environment is something to remember; the heat, noise, people and most importantly, the journey to the place.
I got better at making rough sketch of the overall and experimenting with colours. I used design markers to fill in the sketch. It was ugly at first, I was about to feel down before everything turned out well when I outlined the building with a black sharpie. Fyi, it took me around 2 hours to finish the drawing. I was afraid I might take longer since I took Afah with me too. Hehe.
At first, the plan was to draw the front side of the Abdul Samad building but then, it was so hot, I could barely stand the heat at Dataran Merdeka. So, I stayed at the entrance of the building and decided that perhaps it would be better if I concentrate on one spot only and I picked this tower. :)
I would go on my own because maybe it would be a hassle if I force others to come with me but hey, Afah (my pizzative Sarawakian fwen) agreed to join me and we took the bus and ktm to get to Masjid Jamek before walking to Dataran. Aargh I love this sort of adventure! It feels great to be able to go on spontaneous trips like this one and get out of my crammed hostel room once in a while (okay, I never really stay in my room anyway). I can't really say get to breathe in fresh air since well, it's KL. ;/
